Zume, one of SoftBank's troubled children, is not having a great year. They started with robots making pizza, saw a $4 billion dollar valuation in November 2019, and are now laying off 53% of their employee base in early 2020 and pivoting to sustainable packaging.
A sustainable food system is a more than worthwhile aim, but their focus is unclear, and the layoffs are change in direction are likely to cause problems with culture, and hiring for a long time to come.
For now, they claim to be opening up 100 new jobs following the layoffs, but it's best to look elsewhere, to less troubled companies.
